About Agapè in Practice

'Agapè in Practice' is a research project conducted at Erasmus University Rotterdam, which focuses on a new way of leadership and organisation. The current paradigm in organizational science is focused on control. Based on this line of thought, one strives for perfect monitoring and contractual completeness. Empathy and compassion are concepts which do not come to mind as easily when it comes to organization and leadership. The more central concepts in this field are continuity, market share and profit maximization. However, leading your team in a compassionate way leads to a different experience of employees. This is expected to lead to better results of a team and with that, of the business as a whole. The extent to which one manages compassionately, is measured by four aspects, which are:

Durable success

With this aspect, the relevant question is what drives you as a person. Is it status and possessions or rather inner balance and gratitude? This aspect also covers success of the organization. What do you value most, and which interests do you take into account?

Centrality of the community

This construct involves the question to what extent you, as a manager, prioritize creating a sense of community within the organization. Are you actively conversing about organizational values? Do you also protect the community against undesirable behavior?

Veracity

How much do you value the truth? Do you consider truth of utmost importance or do you accept a white lie?

Empathy

Measuring empathy, the central aspects are the knowledge and skills to put yourself in your employees' shoes. This involves cognitive and affective empathy.
